Frog Meadow sits on what was once the Wheeler Farm — a 1700s dairy farm and apple orchard perched just below historic Newfane Hill. Today, the land has evolved into a tapestry of perennial beds, vegetable and fruit gardens, wildflower meadows, and a thriving varietal apple orchard. It’s a living landscape shaped by seasons, sun, and the many hands and wings that move through it.
Our gardens are lovingly tended and vibrantly alive. Honeybees from our hives drift between blossoms, butterflies and hummingbirds hover over the beds, and bats sweep through the twilight sky. The land is shared with owls, hawks, songbirds, woodpeckers, otters, deer, and—on rare and magical mornings—even a wandering moose. Over 100 bird species have been spotted here, offering a constant chorus of song and color throughout the year.
Guests are invited to explore the gardens at their own pace. Wander the winding paths, settle into a stone bench, curl up in an Adirondack chair, or sway in the hammock beside the swimming pond. Whether you’re enjoying the morning light shimmering across the flowers or watching the fireflies dance at dusk, the gardens offer endless pockets of peace.
April & May: Daffodils, crocuses, tulips, lilacs, and ornamental pear trees brighten the landscape. Fiddlehead ferns unfurl, apple blossoms open, and the bees begin their busy season.
June: Bearded irises, daylilies, and peonies explode into color. Fresh asparagus and strawberries are ready to harvest — the first sweet tastes of summer.
July: Climbing hydrangeas soften the stonework, and towering hollyhocks reach ten feet into the sky. Strawberries and raspberries ripen under the warm sun.
August: The gardens reach their peak — bold, lush, and overflowing. Blueberries are plentiful and perfect for snacking right off the bush.
September: Asters bloom, hydrangeas shift into their autumn hues, and apples blush with color. It’s time for gathering blossoms to dry and savor all winter.
October: Apple picking, cider making, honey harvesting, and fall foliage create a full sensory celebration of the season. Fresh apples and fresh-pressed cider fill the kitchen and the air.
